So today the school took us to the Gucci Museum at
Piazza della Signoria. It was actually my second time there, and I was as
impressed as the first time. The bamboo bags, suitcases and gowns are to die
for. The whole heritage of the Gucci brand is interesting and inspiring.
Most people, especially Italians, are saying that
Gucci is becoming too commercial for their liking, and I do agree with this to
some extent. Just like Louis Vuitton, Gucci is one of the labels that many
believe have been tainted by the common touch. It is overexposed due to the
rapid expansion plan of the brand. I told myself that I would never purchase a
Gucci bag because it is not exclusive like before, and there are many
counterfeits. However, after paying a visit to the museum, my perception of
Gucci has changed a little.
The Italians have always been known for their
craftsmanship and the craftsmanship involved in making a Gucci bag is simply
amazing. I was brought back to the time when Gucci was a brand that signified
luxury and quality. The vintage Gucci bags displayed at the museum are
exceptional. Take the Gucci bamboo bag for example, which was created in the
40s and was crafted using flame to bend the handle into its distinctive
horseshoe shape. It was the iconic bag. Imagine Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn
with the Gucci bamboo bag. Now I crave for a Gucci bamboo bag.
Luxury or not, Gucci is still a brand that many crave
and will continue to be a fashion authority.
